Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is conducted annually for selection of Group A and Group B officers for the engineering services that meet the technical and managerial functions in various fields of Engineering of the Government of India.

ESE officers are selected by the union (Central) government on the recommendations made by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

An ESE officer is selected after going through a rigorous 3-stage process of Prelims objective Exam, Mains Subjective Exam and Interview. It tests the overall comprehensive knowledge of student in his domain along with general engineering concepts in real life with little focus on current affairs in engineering world.

Various central departments from Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering recruit through UPSC ESE.

IES officers carry high respect and status and are mandated to manage and execute activities in diverse technical and managerial fields. They administer a broad segment of the public sector economy, which constitutes of Power, Indian Railways, Defense service of Engineers, Central Water engineering, Central Engineering Service, Telecommunications, etc.

All appointments to the Group A services are made by the President of India.
