RRB JE Syllabus 2026 For CBT 1 & CBT 2 and Technical Abilities

RRB JE Syllabus 2026 Exam

The RRB JE 2026 exam has two stages. Each stage tests something different.

CBT 1 checks the basics. Mathematics, reasoning, general awareness, general science. Nothing branch-specific here.

CBT 2 is where selection actually happens. Out of its 150 questions, 100 come from the candidate’s own engineering branch. This is the stage that decides the merit list, not CBT 1.

That difference matters. Take a Civil candidate who splits study hours equally between both stages. He is not preparing wrong, exactly. But he is preparing for the wrong exam. Technical marks are what carry weight here, and they need more than equal effort.

This page covers the RRB JE Syllabus 2026 the way a candidate actually needs it. Stage by stage. Subject by subject. Branch by branch. Along with the exam pattern, the qualifying marks, and where the marks genuinely concentrate.

Engineers Academy has built its RRB JE preparation on Nimbus Learning around this very structure, branch-wise, so the syllabus below is not just a list to read once and forget.

A quick update before moving ahead. The Railway Recruitment Board has confirmed CEN 04/2026, with 4,029 vacancies for Junior Engineer and allied posts. The notification came out on 13th August 2026. CBT 1 is scheduled across 27th, 28th and 30th October 2026.

Whatever time is left before then should go against this exact syllabus. Not a general one, not last year’s version. This one.

RRB JE Syllabus 2026 — Quick Overview

Two things stand out here, and neither is obvious at first glance. CBT 1 marks are wiped clean once a candidate clears it — nothing carries forward.

And the technical section alone in CBT 2 outweighs every other CBT 2 subject combined. Read the RRB JE exam pattern and RRB JE eligibility pages for the full stage-wise selection process before going further.

RRB JE Syllabus 2026 PDF: What It Covers and Where to Get It

A downloadable copy of this syllabus is worth keeping on hand through the preparation cycle — not to read once, but to check against, week after week, as topics get ticked off.

The official version sits on the RRB regional website tied to the candidate’s applied zone; refer to the RRB JE official notification for the zone-wise link and posting details.

Alongside the syllabus itself, working through previous years’ RRB JE question papers tells a candidate something a syllabus list cannot:

which topics inside that list actually get asked, and how often. For branch-specific print material built around this exact syllabus, EA Publications has put together dedicated guides — the RRB JE books for 2026 preparation round-up is a reasonable starting point for anyone deciding what to buy.

RRB JE CBT 1 Syllabus 2026

CBT 1 is a screening stage, plain and simple. It decides who moves forward, not who finishes near the top.

Four subjects make up the paper — Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, and General Science — and a candidate needs the minimum qualifying percentage for their category on top of whatever cut-off gets set for that year.

RRB JE Mathematics Syllabus for CBT 1

Thirty questions, thirty marks. Most of what shows up here sits comfortably within a school-level mathematics course, though the pace at which questions must be solved is where candidates actually lose time.

  • Number system and BODMAS
  • Decimals and fractions
  • LCM and HCF
  • Ratio and proportion
  • Percentage
  • Mensuration
  • Time and work
  • Time and distance
  • Simple and compound interest
  • Profit and loss
  • Algebra
  • Geometry and trigonometry
  • Elementary statistics
  • Square root
  • Age calculations
  • Calendar and clock
  • Pipes and cisterns

RRB JE General Intelligence and Reasoning Syllabus

Twenty-five questions test how a candidate thinks under pressure rather than what they have memorised. This section rewards daily practice far more than last-minute revision.

  • Analogies
  • Alphabetical and number series
  • Coding and decoding
  • Mathematical operations
  • Relationships
  • Syllogism
  • Jumbling
  • Venn diagrams
  • Data interpretation and data sufficiency

  • Similarities and differences
  • Analytical reasoning
  • Classification
  • Directions
  • Statements, arguments and assumptions

RRB JE General Awareness Syllabus for CBT 1

Fifteen questions, the smallest share of CBT 1 marks, and for that reason exactly the section candidates are tempted to skip. Skipping it is a mistake — these fifteen marks come at almost no preparation cost once current affairs become a daily fifteen-minute habit.

  • Current affairs
  • Indian geography
  • Indian history and culture, including the freedom struggle
  • Indian polity and constitution
  • Indian economy
  • Environmental issues
  • Sports
  • General scientific developments
  • Technological developments

RRB JE General Science Syllabus for CBT 1

Thirty questions drawn from Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences at roughly the CBSE Class 10 level. Nothing here demands engineering-depth knowledge; it tests whether foundational science was retained.

  • Physics — units and measurements, force and motion, work, energy and power, light, sound, electricity, magnetism
  • Chemistry — atomic structure, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, periodic table, metals and non-metals
  • Life Science — biology basics, human body systems, plant kingdom, animal kingdom, basic life processes

RRB JE CBT 2 Syllabus 2026

CBT 2 is where the exam decides who gets selected. Every mark scored here goes into the final merit list, and a full 100 of the 150 questions belong to the candidate’s own technical branch.

Four general subjects fill the remaining 50 marks: General Awareness, Physics and Chemistry, Basics of Computer Applications, and Basics of Environment and Pollution Control.

RRB JE General Awareness Syllabus for CBT 2

RRB JE Exam Pattern 2026

Knowing the syllabus without knowing how marks get distributed across it is only half the picture. The exam pattern below fixes that.

RRB JE CBT 1 Exam Pattern 2026

Duration: 90 minutes, extended to 120 minutes for candidates eligible for scribe assistance. Negative marking of 1/3 mark applies to every wrong answer.

RRB JE CBT 2 Exam Pattern 2026

Duration: 120 minutes, extended to 160 minutes with scribe eligibility. Same 1/3 negative marking applies.

A virtual calculator is permitted here, unlike in CBT 1 — a small detail, but one that changes how a candidate should practise numerical questions in the months before the exam.

RRB JE CBT 1 vs CBT 2 Exam Pattern: Key Differences

RRB JE Subject Wise Weightage 2026

A syllabus list treats every topic as equal. In practice, marks never distribute evenly, and knowing where they concentrate changes how revision time should be split.

The tables below compare topic-wise weightage across two recent cycles for the three largest technical branches.

RRB JE Electrical Subject Wise Weightage Comparison

Electrical Machines has held steady as the single heaviest topic across both cycles — the one area an Electrical candidate cannot afford to under-prepare.

RRB JE Civil Subject Wise Weightage Comparison’

Building Materials and Construction has picked up the most ground of any Civil topic between cycles, moving from a moderate share to the single largest slice of the technical paper.

RRB JE Mechanical Subject Wise Weightage Comparison

Manufacturing and Metrology now accounts for more than a third of the Mechanical technical paper — by some distance the topic to prioritise first.

RRB JE Minimum Qualifying Marks 2026

These are the floor requirements, applied in addition to whatever cut-off gets set for that particular recruitment cycle and posting zone.

How to Prepare for RRB JE Syllabus 2026

Preparation for CBT 1 and CBT 2 pulls in slightly different directions, and treating them as one undifferentiated block of study time rarely works well.

For CBT 1:

  • Start with Mathematics and General Science, since both draw on school-level concepts that need refreshing rather than learning from scratch
  • Practise reasoning daily — this section rewards speed built over weeks, not a single intensive session
  • Keep a running note of formulas and shortcuts rather than re-deriving them each time
  • Read current affairs on a fixed daily schedule instead of in occasional bursts
  • Work through RRB JE CBT 1 previous year papers and timed mock tests

For CBT 2:

  • Weight preparation time toward Technical Abilities first — it carries two-thirds of the CBT 2 marks
  • Revise engineering fundamentals before pushing into advanced branch-specific topics
  • Practise numerical problems from the technical syllabus repeatedly, since these questions consume the most time under exam conditions
  • Do not neglect Physics, Chemistry, Computer Applications and Environment — fifty easy marks sit here for candidates who bother to prepare them properly
  • Attempt full-length CBT 2 mocks through the RRB JE test series alongside previous year papers, close to how the real exam will feel

RRB JE Syllabus 2026 Preparation Support: Nimbus Learning and Engineers Academy

A syllabus, on its own, tells a candidate what to study. It does not tell anyone how to get through it in the weeks that remain. That is a different problem, and it needs a different kind of help.

This is exactly where structured coaching earns its place. Engineers Academy runs its RRB JE preparation through Nimbus Learning, its online platform, and the courses are built branch-wise — Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Electronics each get their own track.

A candidate working through this exact syllabus has a few formats to pick from:

  • Live batch — covers both CBT 1 and CBT 2 in one enrolment. Fixed schedule, fixed pace, works best for candidates who want structure from day one.
  • Recorded CBT 2 batch — for repeat candidates, or working candidates who cannot sit through live classes at fixed hours. Same content, but the pace stays in the candidate’s own hands.
  • Crash-course revision track — a shorter, faster pass meant for closer to the exam date, once the first round of preparation is already done.

A few pages carry the actual detail behind each of these:

  • Full scheduling for the current live batches sits on the RRB JE 2026 live classes page.
  • The complete course breakdown, format by format, is on the RRB JE course page.
  • Civil candidates in particular may want to check the RRB JE Civil course page directly — a large share of this branch’s technical weightage sits in building materials and structural design, and the course page speaks to that more specifically than a general overview can.

RRB JE Syllabus 2026 FAQs

What subjects are included in the RRB JE CBT 1 syllabus?
CBT 1 covers four subjects — Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, and General Science — across 100 questions in 90 minutes.

What is included in the RRB JE CBT 2 syllabus?
CBT 2 has 150 questions across General Awareness, Physics and Chemistry, Basics of Computer Applications, Basics of Environment and Pollution Control, and a 100-mark Technical Abilities section specific to the candidate’s engineering branch.

Is the technical syllabus different for Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Electronics candidates?
Yes, entirely. Each branch is tested only on its own technical syllabus — a Civil candidate answers no Electrical questions, and an Electrical candidate answers no Mechanical ones. The general sections of CBT 2, however, stay the same across all branches.

What is the marking scheme for the RRB JE exam?
Both CBT 1 and CBT 2 award 1 mark per correct answer with a deduction of 1/3 mark for each incorrect answer. There is no penalty for questions left unattempted.

How can subject-wise weightage help in RRB JE preparation?
Weightage data shows which topics inside a branch’s technical syllabus draw the heaviest share of marks across recent cycles.

Where can candidates download the RRB JE Syllabus 2026 PDF?
The official syllabus PDF is published on the RRB regional website tied to a candidate’s applied zone, referenced through the official notification for that cycle.

Does clearing CBT 1 guarantee selection?
No. CBT 1 only qualifies a candidate for CBT 2; its marks are not counted toward the final merit list, which is based entirely on CBT 2 performance.

Is the RRB JE syllabus the same for every recruitment zone?
The subject-wise syllabus and exam pattern are uniform across RRB zones nationally. Vacancy numbers, exam centres and posting locations vary by zone and are specified in the zone-wise notification.

What is the minimum qualifying percentage for RRB JE?
It varies by category — 40% for General/EWS, 30% for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and SC, and 25% for ST — applied together with the cut-off set for that recruitment cycle.

How is the RRB JE CMA syllabus different from the engineering branches?
The Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant syllabus draws on physics, chemistry and metallurgy topics rather than a single core engineering discipline, and is assessed separately from the Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Mechanical technical papers.
